Mohanlal has started his next project, and this one carries a generational echo. The Malayalam star has begun work on L368, his first collaboration with director Anoop Sathyan, whose debut Varane Avashyamund made him a name to watch. The team has shared the first look and pooja ceremony images, confirming that the film is now officially underway.

That pairing matters because of the family tree. Anoop Sathyan is the son of Sathyan Anthikad, a filmmaker with whom Mohanlal has worked repeatedly. Seeing the next Sathyan step into the director’s chair with the same star gives the project a second-generation link without the film itself having to say a word.

What the first look shows

The still is quieter than the usual mass poster. Mohanlal sits between two young girls on a coastal road, with the sea running along one side. Colourful origami paper swans are placed around them, and the girls hold up their hands in a gesture that reads as sign language. It is a soft, visual introduction: the image suggests communication beyond dialogue, and a story built on intimacy more than scale.

The pooja ceremony pictures, meanwhile, mark the formal start of production. Sangeeth Prathap, who has shared screen space with Mohanlal in Hridayapoorvam and Thudakkam, has been announced in a key role. Binu George Alexander is producing, while Anoop Sathyan handles writing, direction and editing.

Why Anoop Sathyan’s return stands out

Anoop has not directed a feature since his debut Varane Avashyamund, which starred Shobana, Suresh Gopi, Kalyani Priyadarshan and Dulquer Salmaan. A six-year gap makes L368 a comeback, not just a new film. Returning with a star of Mohanlal’s scale raises the stakes, especially because the first look already appears to prioritise mood and gesture over standard hero moments.

Where L368 sits in Mohanlal’s slate

The announcement lands during a busy stretch. Mohanlal most recently appeared in a cameo in Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, reprising his role as Mathew. His next lead outing is Athimanoharam, his second film with Tharun Moorthy, which is set for December 24, 2026 and pairs him with Meera Jasmine. Its first single, Sundara Ravanan, arrives on November 1, 2026, timed to Kerala Piravi.

Beyond that, his upcoming films include:

  • Operation Ganga with Vishnu Mohan, co-starring Arjun Rampal and Bhagyashri Borse in their Malayalam debuts, along with Adil Hussain, R. Parthiban and Aju Varghese.
  • Nedukandam Miracle with Dileesh Pothan.
  • Projects with Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, Jude Anthany Joseph and Jeethu Joseph.

What this means for the audience

For fans, L368 is the kind of pairing that promises craft rather than just star power. The first look does not reveal plot, but it does set a tone: coastal, tender and interested in non-verbal communication. That is a meaningful choice in a film culture where first-look posters often lean on larger-than-life imagery. The real question now is what Anoop Sathyan, after six years away, chooses to say with this material — and how Mohanlal fits into a film that appears to listen more than it speaks.
