Mannat is known as Shah Rukh Khan’s sea-facing mansion, but Anil Kapoor has just reminded fans that the Bandra landmark had a film career before it became a home. On Star Plus’ India Ke Top 1%, the host told contestants he shot Tezaab at the property long before SRK bought it.
A movie set before it was a mansion
The memory came up when a contestant said she would use a ₹1 crore prize to buy a house like Mannat. Anil said he remembered Shah Rukh buying Mannat “right before my eyes” and added that he himself had filmed Tezaab there when it was still a shoot location.
The anecdote reaches further back. Anil recalled meeting Shah Rukh during the making of Benaam Badshah, before SRK’s film debut. “When I saw him and looked into his eyes, I felt that he would become a very big star,” Anil said. Benaam Badshah released in 1991; Shah Rukh entered films the next year with Deewana.
From Carter Road to Bandstand
Shah Rukh moved to Mumbai in 1991 and first lived with friends, then bought a flat on Carter Road. Anil says the two used to meet there, and the future superstar already had a clear goal: a grand sea-facing bungalow. In 2000 he bought Mannat, a heritage property on Bandra’s Bandstand, and it has been the family’s home since. The Khans temporarily moved out last year while it was renovated.
- 1991: Anil and Shah Rukh meet during Benaam Badshah; SRK moves to Mumbai.
- 1992: Shah Rukh debuts in Deewana.
- 2000: He buys Mannat on Bandstand.
- December 24: SRK returns with King.
A full-circle Bollywood memory
The two actors also shared screen in Trimurti, the 1995 box-office miss that starred Jackie Shroff. But the Mannat reveal is the stronger full-circle moment: an elder star reading potential before a debut, a bungalow that went from film set to family home, and a superstar who bought the dream he described on Carter Road.
The story also shows how Mumbai real estate and Bollywood history overlap. A heritage Bandstand property can be a working set in one era and a star residence in another, and the memory gives fans a concrete before-and-after for SRK’s rise.
For celebrity-watchers, the clip is the kind of nugget that turns a reality-show conversation into a talking point. It connects a ₹1 crore contestant wish to a journey that began with a newcomer in a flat and ended with the most famous sea-facing bungalow in the city.
What comes next for SRK
After a three-year gap since Dunki in 2023, Shah Rukh returns with Siddharth Anand’s King. The action film marks his first on-screen collaboration with daughter Suhana and also features Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, Arshad Warsi and Jaideep Ahlawat. It hits screens December 24.
The memory also lands at a useful moment. With King set for late December, every origin-story clip about SRK’s early Mumbai years keeps him in the entertainment conversation without a new release doing all the work.
