Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has done what no Tamil release has managed before. By the close of business today, trade estimates put the film at roughly USD 26 million in international grosses, making it the first Kollywood title to clear the USD 25 million mark overseas.
The number that matters
For Kollywood fans, this is a reset moment for what the industry can expect outside India. Tamil cinema has always had a committed overseas audience, but an international run past USD 25 million had stayed just out of reach until now.
- Overseas total expected to land around USD 26 million by the end of today
- Middle East alone is over USD 8.50 million, almost USD 2 million ahead of the previous Kollywood best in the region
- India cume has already topped Rs 400 crore in 10 days, according to trade reports
Why the Gulf is carrying the record
The Middle East is doing much of the heavy lifting, and the reasons are broader than Rajinikanth alone. The presence of Mohanlal is being credited as a major factor, because the Gulf has a large Malayalam-speaking audience. Trade watchers say the film could even challenge the biggest Malayalam grosser in the region, with the UAE considered the most likely market to fall.
Can it stretch to USD 30 million?
Reaching USD 30 million from here is seen as a tough ask, but not an impossible one. Jailer 2 is already the top-grossing Kollywood film in several overseas markets, or on its way to becoming one. The close battle will be in Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka, where the estimates suggest a tight finish. Strong late legs in those traditional Tamil markets could decide whether the total inches higher.
What to watch next
The next few days in Southeast Asia will tell the story. Keep in mind that these are trade estimates rather than audited final numbers, so the actuals can move a little. For fans, the Gulf numbers now matter as much as domestic opening-day chatter, and the first question after a big weekend is no longer only how it did in Tamil Nadu but how far it travelled. The direction, though, is already clear: Kollywood’s overseas ceiling has just moved up.
