Tamil cinema lost one of its most recognisable musical voices on October 17. Deva, the composer widely known as the “King of Gaana,” died in Chennai at 75 after a heart attack. He was admitted to Surya Hospital in Kodambakkam around 8:30 AM and passed away shortly after, with fans and film colleagues grieving a career that shaped how South Indian stars sound on screen.
A career built on volume and range
Born Devanesan Chokkalingam on November 20, 1950, Deva was just weeks away from turning 76. He entered film composition with the 1986 Tamil film Maattukara Mannaru and went on to score more than 400 films. His work stretched across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, which made him one of the most prolific composers in the region.
The sound behind Rajinikanth’s entries
For many moviegoers, Deva’s single most lasting piece is the introductory music he wrote for Rajinikanth’s 1992 film Annamalai. The score that accompanies the “Super Star Rajni” title card still plays when the actor makes his on-screen entrance. That is a rare achievement: a few seconds of music that became a permanent part of a superstar’s image.
His credits were not limited to Rajinikanth. Deva also created soundtracks for Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith Kumar and Pawan Kalyan, giving his work a presence across multiple star generations.
Why “gaana” matters here
Gaana is a distinctly Tamil popular-music form, built on catchy rhythms, street-level slang and everyday energy. Deva’s comfort with that style earned him the “King of Gaana” tag. By carrying gaana into mainstream film scores, he made a local sound part of the commercial soundtrack grammar, and gave younger audiences a musical language that felt close to the way they actually spoke.
How the film world is remembering him
Rajinikanth attended the funeral in Chennai to pay his last respects. Khushbu Sundar, who said she had met Deva around ten days before his death, expressed shock at the loss. Kamal Haasan and singer Chinmayi were among those who joined the tributes, while fans shared memories of the songs and title themes they grew up humming.
Deva’s legacy can be summed up in a few markers:
- More than 400 film scores across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam
- Composed the “Super Star Rajni” title-card music for Annamalai in 1992
- Worked with Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith Kumar and Pawan Kalyan
For celebrity-watchers, this is the passing of a behind-the-scenes figure whose work still frames the biggest star entrances in South Indian cinema. He may not have stood in front of the camera, but his melodies will keep entering with the stars for years to come.
