Ranabaali trailer: Vijay Deverakonda’s fight against British rule

Vijay Deverakonda is returning to the big screen as a warrior with a cause. The trailer for Ranabaali, his new period action drama with Rashmika Mandanna, has dropped, and it places the story squarely in 19th-century South India under British colonial rule. The film is set to open in theatres on October 16, 2026.

What the trailer shows

The nearly four-minute trailer begins with a community pushed to its limits by famine and oppressive rule. Vijay plays Ranabaali, a warrior who steps forward after his people suffer hunger and exploitation. He and his wife Jayamma, played by Rashmika Mandanna, lead a resistance against Sir Theodore Hector, a ruthless British commissioner. The trailer moves from raids on colonial grain supplies to guerrilla attacks, building toward an all-out battle.

South African actor Arnold Vosloo, known to global audiences from The Mummy, appears as the main antagonist. That casting gives the rebellion a recognisable face on the other side and raises the stakes of the film’s central confrontation.

Action, romance and a familiar framing

The trailer leans into spectacle and scale. The production design and visuals support the period setting, and the Vijay-Rashmika pairing returns with the romantic thread woven through the action. For fans of the two stars, that mix is the main draw.

At the same time, the edit has a familiar rhythm. The trailer introduces a chosen-one saviour and a spiritual awakening, beats that have become common in big-canvas action dramas. That is not a reason to write the film off before watching, but it does mean the film will have to deliver something distinct when the full story arrives.

What to look for when tickets open

  • Setting: 19th-century South India, built around resistance to British colonial rule.
  • Lead pair: Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna as Ranabaali and Jayamma.
  • Villain: Arnold Vosloo’s Sir Theodore Hector, the British commissioner.
  • Release date: October 16, 2026, in theatres.

For celebrity-watchers, a trailer is more than a teaser: it is the first real signal of how a film will be positioned. Here, the positioning is clear — one man against a colonial force, with a love story and a spiritual arc wrapped inside. That gives the makers a broad canvas to pull in both action fans and fans of the lead pair.

It also arrives while both leads have busy slates. Vijay has Rowdy Janardhana and the tentatively titled VDxShouryuv in the pipeline. Rashmika has Mysaa scheduled for November 27, 2026, and is rumoured for Raaka with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone, though that project is yet to be officially confirmed.

The real question is whether Ranabaali can make its period rebellion feel urgent rather than simply familiar. The trailer gives fans enough to mark the date, even if the full film has more to prove.
