The planned Malayalam sequel Premalu 2 will not be reaching theatres. Director Girish AD has confirmed that the project, which was set to reunite Naslen and Mamitha Baiju after the 2024 blockbuster Premalu, was shelved unexpectedly — and it cost the team a full year.
What Girish AD said
At the success event of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, Girish AD explained the timeline behind the shelved sequel. He had spent nearly a year on Premalu 2 before work on Bethlehem Kudumba Unit began. The sequel, he said, had to be abandoned without warning.
“We had to abandon the project unexpectedly, and it was a huge setback for us,” Girish AD said. “We lost an entire year because of it.”
His frustration is about more than a missed release. Girish AD added that there was no need for the team to lose that much time, which makes the shelving feel like a sudden interruption rather than a planned creative shift.
The sequel plan that fell apart
Premalu was the foundation. The 2024 romantic comedy follows Sachin, a young man whose plans to study in the UK collapse, pushing him to move to Hyderabad. There he meets Reenu, an IT professional, and spends the story trying to win her heart while romance and awkward situations pile up. Naslen and Mamitha Baiju led the film, and it became a major success.
With that momentum, a sequel looked like the obvious next move. Instead, the team lost time and had to rethink its slate.
- Girish AD spent nearly a year on Premalu 2 before it was shelved.
- The sequel was planned after the original film’s success.
- Had it stayed on track, it would have reached theatres during Vishu last year.
- The team then moved to Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, which was completed faster and released three to four months later.
Where the team landed
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, headlined by Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju, follows Ashley, who moves to Angamaly with her family and falls for Justin, an older neighbour and caterer who shares her love of music. Their relationship faces family opposition over the age difference before the two reconnect at a wedding and choose to marry.
The fact that it was completed in a relatively short window shows how quickly Girish AD redirected after the shelving. It also reframes Premalu 2 as a costly detour rather than a dead end the team could not recover from.
What it means for fans
The shelving closes the door on the immediate Premalu reunion many fans were expecting. Girish AD has not announced a new timeline for the sequel, and the project’s future remains unclear. For now, the team has moved on, and the film made in its place is the one earning attention.
