Jailer 2 Posts Record Rs 410 Crore Global Opening Weekend

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has turned its opening weekend into a statement. As per trade estimates, the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed action drama collected Rs 410 crore gross worldwide in four days, the biggest opening weekend ever for a Kollywood film.

Kollywood, the Chennai-centred Tamil film industry, has long treated opening records as a measure of star power. By that measure, this is a very big number.

Box-office tracking is part sport and part tea-leaf reading, but the scale here is difficult to ignore. A Rs 410 crore first weekend means the film is drawing a large domestic crowd and travelling strongly overseas, where Rajinikanth has been a reliable draw for years.

Here is the weekend at a glance:

  • Rs 410 crore: estimated global total in the first four days, an all-time Kollywood opening record.
  • Rs 94 crore: estimated Sunday haul globally, after Saturday crossed the century mark.
  • Rs 220 crore: estimated Indian gross for the opening weekend.
  • USD 20 million / Rs 190 crore: estimated overseas total over the same four days.

The India figure includes an estimated Rs 60 crore Sunday at the domestic box office, which shows the film is still accelerating rather than cooling after a huge start.

The record Rajinikanth just took from himself

Jailer 2 did not merely set a record; it replaced a Rajinikanth record. The previous best Kollywood opening weekend belonged to Coolie, which collected Rs 371 crore. Jailer 2 has now pushed the benchmark higher, and both of the top two opening weekends in Tamil cinema star the same man.

For a superstar whose career has spanned decades, that is the bigger headline. At a time when star power is regularly debated, Rajinikanth has shown he can still turn a film into an event and pull audiences into theatres immediately.

What the next two days could do

The timing could hardly be better. Dusshera and Puja holidays fall on Monday and Tuesday, giving the film another chance to build momentum after its record start. Trade estimates suggest Jailer 2 could close in on Rs 500 crore during this stretch if the pace holds.

Even that would leave the film about Rs 100 crore short of the original Jailer and roughly Rs 150 crore behind the current industry hit, 2.0, on lifetime gross. But the original Jailer added nearly Rs 300 crore after its first six days, so the real test is whether Jailer 2 can keep running after the holiday pop fades.
