Disha Patani: risk over a fixed image after 10 years

Disha Patani is entering her second decade in Bollywood with a clear instruction for herself: do not settle into a single image. Ten years after her debut in M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, the actor is talking less about the part that introduced her and more about the parts she has not played yet.

A decade of learning the basics

Patani says her first film was a crash course in everything. She was new to how a set operated, how to face the camera, how to build a character and how to absorb a director’s note. In those early days she worked mostly on instinct. Now, she says, her craft has a method behind it, and she is more willing to trust her own choices.

That does not mean she has figured it all out. If anything, Patani says she does not want to reach a place where the work feels automatic. For her, the uncertainty around a new character is what keeps acting interesting—and the bigger worry would be losing that curiosity.

Risk over a fixed image

The actor’s wish list for the next years is deliberately broader than the glamour-led image she is often slotted into. She wants parts with more contradiction, where the physicality is not the point and the character itself has to carry the story. In practical terms, that means:

  • Psychological dramas that live in the grey areas
  • Character-driven thrillers with inner conflict
  • Riskier action roles where the person matters as much as the set piece

She also wants to move across more filmmakers, languages and genres. “I don’t want to be defined by one particular kind of role or image,” she told Hindustan Times.

What this signals for Bollywood watchers

For fans who track who is trending, Patani’s comments are a useful signal: the next chapter may look different from the last. Plenty of actors talk about breaking an image; fewer actually make the shift on screen. The test will be in the projects she signs next and whether they match the risk she is describing.

Her emphasis on curiosity is also a career lesson in miniature. Ten years is long enough to be known, but not so long that a performer cannot change direction. Patani appears to want the second decade to be less about the image and more about the choices.
