40,000 police as Bollywood reacts to Jantar Mantar crackdown

The film industry’s most vocal names are speaking up about a police build-up in central Delhi. More than 40,000 Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel have been deployed before an anti-CEC protest at Jantar Mantar, and several Bollywood figures are treating the detentions as a cultural story, not just a political one.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) called the gathering to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The protesters argue that the revised voter roll needs scrutiny, and the CJP wanted to press that demand in public. By Saturday, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka had been detained, along with hundreds of protesters and journalists trying to gather in central Delhi.

Prakash Raj’s direct challenge

Actor and activist Prakash Raj shared a Satish Acharya cartoon and wrote, “How long will you escape from Citizens dissent #justasking.” In a video on X, he focused on the detention of Abhijeet, Saurav and Ashutosh from a flight and homes. “You have not arrested our voice! You have arrested yourself,” he said, calling the response a sign that the establishment is avoiding dissent.

“The nation is watching,” he added, framing the moment as a longer struggle rather than a single day’s clash.

Bollywood reactions in brief

  • Anurag Kashyap wrote “Do Darpok, 40,000 ghulam, Lakhon bahadur,” and encouraged followers to watch AISA president Neha Bora’s live updates; she was detained after starting a march at Dilli Haat.
  • Apurva Asrani noted the detentions of Abhijeet Dipke, Ratna Singh and Dhruv Rathee and wrote, “Tell me this is not dictatorship.”
  • Vishal Dadlani claimed 23 battalions were deployed and the city was at a standstill, adding that this was “only to save one person.”
  • Vir Das posted the meaning of the Streisand Effect, a sign that the heavy response may be giving the protest more attention, not less.

Filmmakers Shirish Kunder and Vikramaditya Motwane, and actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, also added their voices.

What’s actually happening on the ground

Police sealed Jantar Mantar and barricaded adjacent roads. Warnings are being broadcast at three key points under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita against gatherings, processions and road blockades. Among the detained are opposition leaders, journalists and CJP functionaries, including Ratna Singh, MA Baby, Pinarayi Vijayan and John Brittas.

Why the entertainment feeds are full of this

For celebrity watchers, these posts show how a political flashpoint can become a pop-culture story when stars use their reach. The Streisand Effect, which Vir Das pointed to, describes how attempts to hide or suppress something can end up making it more visible. The images of barricades and detentions are already circulating inside entertainment feeds alongside red-carpet and movie news, and that is part of why the protests are trending.
