Nithiin’s next romantic comedy has found its leading lady. Alias Rukmini has officially brought in Aafiya Sayed as the film’s co-lead, with Nani presenting the project under Unanimous Productions. The casting also marks Aafiya’s first Telugu film.
The announcement arrived with a first-look image of Aafiya as Rukmini. In a social media note, the makers called the character the love of Krishna’s life and summed her up as “unfiltered, unapologetic and utterly original.” It is a tidy introduction: the audience gets a sense of the character’s personality before the full trailer lands.
What the title glimpse already set up
Alias Rukmini has been teasing its premise since August, when the title glimpse dropped. In the video, Nani and director Murali discuss a story about a man named Krishna. Nithiin, sleepy in a chair, eventually reveals that Rukmini is his wife. The exchange is light and self-aware, positioning the film as a quirky romantic comedy rather than a heavy star vehicle.
From Bollywood debut to Telugu cinema
Aafiya was most recently seen in Prem Keetanu, her Bollywood debut. The romantic comedy, starring Veer Pahariya, is the official Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam hit Premalu. It also features Aparshakti Khurana, Nikhil Vijay and Rakesh Bedi. Moving from that launchpad to a leading Telugu role puts her in a different market, but the mechanics are similar: a young romantic comedy built around chemistry and character texture.
Nithiin, meanwhile, is coming off Thammudu, a survival action drama that drew mixed-to-negative reviews and underperformed commercially. Returning to romance could be a reset, especially with Nani’s presentation and a date already set.
The buzz around the team
Nani is balancing his presenting duties with a busy acting slate. He was recently on screen in The Paradise, the Srikanth Odela-directed period action drama, and has Blood Romeo, a Sujeeth-directed action comedy, ahead. He has also confirmed a romantic film in the pipeline.
What we know so far
- Aafiya Sayed plays Rukmini, the co-lead opposite Nithiin.
- Nani presents the film under Unanimous Productions.
- The title glimpse arrived in August 2026.
- Alias Rukmini opens in theatres on December 4, 2026.
Why the character-first reveal works
Instead of a routine casting announcement, the team introduced Aafiya through Rukmini’s personality. That gives the audience a hook: a female lead who is direct, assured and a little unpredictable. For a performer entering a new industry, a clear character identity can create recall faster than a list of credits. The first-look image does the same job visually.
The December 4 date makes the next steps clear. Supporting cast details, music and a full trailer are still pending, but the central pairing is now locked. The main question for fans is whether Aafiya can bring the same unfiltered energy to the screen that the makers have promised in the announcement.
