Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has turned the Dussehra holiday into a box office moment. On Tuesday, the action drama added an estimated Rs 52.75 crore in India, nearly 10% more than the Monday figure. That pushes its six-day running total to roughly Rs 325 crore, according to trade estimates.
The holiday lift
Dussehra gave the film a midweek push that most releases do not get. Tuesday’s holiday meant collections rose by close to 10% over Monday instead of following a routine weekday decline. That single day changed the tone of the opening week.
Holiday timing, however, is only part of the story. A film can enjoy a festive bump and still fade once working days return. What keeps Jailer 2 in the conversation is that demand is showing up across multiple markets, not just in one strong circuit.
Why this run is different
The wider territorial picture separates Jailer 2 from a routine hit. Telugu states, Karnataka and Kerala have each grossed over Rs 50 crore in the first six days. That is a rare benchmark for a Tamil film:
- Only the original Jailer had previously crossed Rs 50 crore in all three territories in this manner.
- Tamil Nadu began the run slowly but is now among the top-earning regions.
- The Hindi-dubbed version has impressed, and the Hindi belt is expected to eventually hit Rs 50 crore.
For Tamil cinema, this is the record zone. The original Jailer was the last film to open this wide across southern markets, and being compared with that run is exactly where the sequel wants to be.
Why it matters for fans
Early momentum sets the ceiling for a film’s lifetime run. A title that holds well after its first holiday is far more likely to enter the all-time lists than one that lives off a single big day. For Rajinikanth fans tracking every milestone, this is the difference between a successful sequel and a generational hit.
What comes next
The holiday period has ended, but trade estimates suggest a little spillover on Wednesday before Thursday brings more normal weekday behaviour. The key test is the hold from Wednesday onward: if the film continues to pull big numbers after the festive bump, a run at the all-time Kollywood record becomes realistic.
Tamil Nadu, which started slowly, is now one of the top-earning circuits and looks set to cross Rs 200 crore. The Hindi-dubbed version is also expected to push the Hindi belt past Rs 50 crore. Those regional gains are what the film needs to stay in the record conversation.
