Malayalam cinema’s most quietly anticipated reunion now has a date. Mammootty and director Adoor Gopalakrishnan will return to theatres with Padayaatra on December 4, 2026—their first feature together in 32 years.
A release date is confirmed
The team announced the date on social media with a fresh poster and a short caption: “An Epic Journey is set to begin…” The film stars Mammootty in the lead, with Indrans, Grace Antony, Jagadish, Alencier Ley Lopez, Madhupal, Nandu and Sreeshma Chandran in key roles.
The film’s premise
Padayaatra follows Dr. Devadas, an idealistic, Gandhian medical professional. He walks away from a lucrative city career to practise medicine ethically, moving to a remote tribal region in Kerala and building a community clinic. His relationship with the villagers becomes the story’s emotional backbone—until a suspected attack rattles the area.
When local authorities open an investigation, Dr. Devadas finds himself under scrutiny and police begin questioning his possible involvement. The plot shifts from a doctor’s calling to a man navigating suspicion in a community he has chosen to serve.
Why this matters for star-watchers
The reunion matters because the two have a small but significant filmography together. They collaborated on Anantaram and Mathilukal, then delivered Vidheyan in 1994—a film in which Mammootty played a ruthless antagonist, a performance still remembered in Malayalam cinema.
So a new Mammootty-Adoor Gopalakrishnan project is not a routine star vehicle. It sends one of the industry’s biggest leading men back to the serious, literary register that Adoor is known for. That contrast is the talking point: a mass star returning to a filmmaker associated with festival-circuit craft.
What you can do
- Save the date: Padayaatra opens on December 4, 2026.
- Rewatch Vidheyan to see the most famous previous Mammootty-Adoor collaboration.
- Watch for the first trailer and cast appearances as the December release gets closer.
Mammootty’s next few months
Mammootty was last seen leading Patriot, the Mahesh Narayanan action thriller that brought him together with Mohanlal after several years. Before Padayaatra arrives, he appears in Om, the Dhanush-led action drama directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, scheduled for November 20, 2026. Mela and Mattancherry Mafia are also part of his upcoming lineup.
Padayaatra may be a smaller, more serious project in that calendar, but the release date itself is a moment: after 32 years, one of Malayalam cinema’s most respected actor-director pairs is back on the big screen.
