Television actor Arjun Bijlani and his wife Neha Swami have issued a public clarification after a T-shirt Neha wore at a Mumbai birthday party became the centre of an online backlash. The T-shirt carried Urdu words referring to Prophet Muhammad, and the couple say Neha did not understand what the text meant.
How the moment unfolded
According to the couple’s statement, the T-shirt was gifted by a fan during a trip to Bangkok and later worn at the birthday celebration of actor Kunal Verma and actor Puja Banerjee’s son. Photographs from the event circulated quickly, and criticism followed on social media. Pakistani actor Mishi Khan also weighed in with an Instagram post and asked for a public apology.
What the clarification says
In a note shared on Arjun Bijlani’s Instagram Stories, the couple addressed the controversy directly. “Neha was completely unaware of the meaning and significance of the writing on the T-shirt when she wore it,” the statement said. It added that there was no intention to hurt religious sentiments and stressed that the family respects all faiths.
The statement also drew a line between the mistake and the response to it. “A situation arising from a lack of awareness should not become a reason to subject an individual to online harassment or threats,” the couple wrote, adding that abusive language, curses and threats were deeply distressing and unacceptable.
Finally, they apologised and promised more care in the future, particularly with gifts received from fans.
The three moves in the apology
- Clarified the context: the T-shirt was a fan gift from Bangkok, and the Urdu text was not understood.
- Apologised for the offence: they called it unintentional and said they would be more careful with gifts.
- Set a boundary: they asked people to stop abuse and threats while welcoming dialogue.
Why it matters for celebrity-watchers
This is another example of how quickly a single outfit can become a story. For public figures, every appearance is photographed, cropped and shared before context can catch up. A fan gift may feel personal in the moment, but on camera it becomes a public statement with a life of its own.
The episode also reflects a wider pattern: fan-gifted clothing is rarely screened for language, symbols or slogans. While the intention may be warm, the printed text can carry meanings the wearer never chose. That gap between intention and interpretation is exactly where viral outrage tends to live.
The couple’s response also shows the modern apology format: explain the intent, take responsibility, and separate criticism from harassment. Whether that satisfies the audience is a different question, but it gives the timeline a clear record.
