Bipasha Basu has quietly returned to filming. The actor, whose last screen credit was the 2020 MX Player series Dangerous, is now shooting an untitled Prime Video original directed by Hansal Mehta. The announcement arrived on Monday with a set photograph of Mehta and the three leads.
The project
The untitled series is a crime drama centred on a small town that is rapidly becoming a key stop in the heroin trade. According to the official synopsis, Sunny Kaushal plays an incorruptible cop caught between powerful forces inside the system and criminals outside it. Vishal Jethwa also has a pivotal role.
What Bipasha is playing has not been disclosed. The writing team is Kashyap Kapoor and Raghav Raj Kakker, and Prabhleen Sandhu produces under Almighty Motion Pictures Productions. The title and release date are still to be announced.
Coming back after six years
For Bipasha, the series breaks a six-year gap. Her last acting assignment was Dangerous in 2020, where she played a no-nonsense investigator. Her last traditional theatrical release goes back further, to the 2015 horror remake Alone, in which she appeared with her husband Karan Singh Grover.
That gap makes the comeback feel deliberate. Rather than picking a light project for an easy re-entry, Bipasha has chosen a Hansal Mehta series, which usually means long scenes, heavy material and a character that will be judged less on glamour than on performance.
Why it matters for celebrity-watchers
Mehta’s previous feature was The Buckingham Murders, a 2024 release starring Kareena Kapoor Khan. His stories are generally rooted in real, uncomfortable settings, and the creator’s name alone raises expectations for a serious, binge-worthy show.
For Bipasha’s audience, this is not a red-carpet comeback; it is a casting move that could redefine how she is seen after a long break. Here is what the production announcement tells us:
- Bipasha Basu has begun shooting an untitled Prime Video original series directed by Hansal Mehta.
- Sunny Kaushal leads as an incorruptible cop in a small town turning into a drug hub.
- Vishal Jethwa is also part of the main cast.
- The writing team is Kashyap Kapoor and Raghav Raj Kakker; the producer is Prabhleen Sandhu.
- Bipasha’s character, the title and the release date are still under wraps.
The move also reflects a wider pattern in Bollywood: actors returning after long breaks often choose a finite streaming series because it offers a lead role with built-in audience access and less first-weekend pressure than a theatrical release.
What to watch next
The next meaningful update will likely come when filming wraps or Prime Video announces the title. Until then, the story is the production itself: a much-loved star is back on set, and for now, the details are being held back on purpose.
