Hema Malini, 77, Performs Durga as Navratri Begins in Hyderabad

Hema Malini returned to the stage for one of her most enduring rituals on 11 October, performing the dance recital Durga at the Classic Convention Centre in Hyderabad. The 77-year-old actor-politician appeared as part of the Agarwal Samaj, Telangana’s Agra Dandiya Navratri celebrations, on a date that also marked Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti.

The performance brought her signature ballet to the first day of Navratri, a festival where her Durga production has become a familiar part of the calendar. In photographs shared after the event, she appeared as Mata Parvati, while another actor took the stage as Lord Shiva.

A Navratri ritual, not a one-off

Hema Malini framed the evening as both a performance and a personal milestone. On Instagram, she wrote that it was “a lovely, special feeling” to perform her most popular ballet on the first day of Navratri, adding, “I felt truly blessed.” The event, she noted, combined the Agra Dandiya celebrations with Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti on 11.10.2026.

That rhythm matters. Two years ago, she performed a two-hour dance drama in Mathura on the fourth day of Navratri, portraying different forms of Maa Durga. Hyderabad is the latest city to host a recital that has become her way of marking the festival.

Why the audience responded

Fan reactions were quick and warm. Comments under her posts ranged from “So beautifully divine” to praise for her continuing devotion to dance. One viewer put it plainly: “Her love for art is beyond age. True artist.” That response is the real story for celebrity-watchers: at 77, Hema Malini is still generating the same kind of goodwill that has followed her for decades.

  • The stage: Classic Convention Centre, Hyderabad, for Agarwal Samaj Telangana’s Agra Dandiya Navratri celebrations.
  • The timing: 11 October 2026 — first day of Navratri and Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti.
  • The reaction: Fans praised the performance as divine and Hema said she felt truly blessed.

The larger picture

The Navratri stage is also an extension of a long career. Hema Malini made her acting debut in 1963 with the Tamil film Idhu Sathiyam, entered Hindi cinema with Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1968, and became a fixture in films such as Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta and Satte Pe Satta. Her last big-screen appearance was in Shimla Mirchi (2020).

Asked in 2025 about a possible comeback, she said modern films are not written for someone like her; a project would have to be shaped differently for her to fit. That makes her live performances even more significant: they are the space where audiences still see the performer at work.

She is currently a Lok Sabha MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party, representing the Mathura constituency, and continues to balance public duties with the stage.
