Thalaivar opens his doors for Dorothy
Superstar Rajinikanth has given a small Tamil drama the kind of endorsement no paid campaign can match. After watching Dorothy, he invited writer-director Karthik Subbaraj and the film’s team to his residence, where he spoke about the film in detail for an hour.
Subbaraj shared photos from the meeting on social media and wrote that Rajinikanth called the film ‘Fantastic..Beautiful… Mindblowing!!’ The director added that the superstar said, ‘I was searching for this Karthik Subbaraj… Hat’s off.’
A friendship, a secret and a family’s order
Dorothy is set in the 1980s and centres on two childhood friends, Karthi and Subbu, who work as henchmen for Subbu’s father, Whistle Veeraiah. The story turns when Dorothy, Subbu’s sister-in-law, passes away under mysterious circumstances. In the aftermath, Subbu reveals her true gender identity and is rejected by her family. A flashback also establishes that Dorothy had supported Subbu in embracing her true self.
Veeraiah then hires Karthi to kill Subbu to protect the family’s honour. The film follows the pair as Karthi struggles with the order and his own feelings. That emotional journey is the heart of the drama.
Why Rajinikanth’s seal matters
Dorothy was already drawing a notable response in theatres, but a warm post-viewing conversation with Rajinikanth can widen that attention quickly. For a film built on word of mouth, a superstar’s public affection can convince fence-sitting viewers to book a ticket.
- Rajinikanth called the film ‘fantastic, beautiful’ and ‘mindblowing’, according to Subbaraj.
- The conversation covered every aspect of the film and lasted around an hour.
- Subbaraj wrote that Rajini told him, ‘I was searching for this Karthik Subbaraj… Hat’s off.’
Who’s behind Dorothy and what’s next
The film stars Rishikanth and Sananth in the lead, with Keerthy Suresh in a co-lead role. Ramachandran Durairaj, Muthazhagi, Jeeva Subramanian and Muthukumar appear in key parts. Karthik Subbaraj has written and directed the film, with music by Ilaiyaraaja.
Rajinikanth, meanwhile, returns in Jailer 2 on October 15, 2026. The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel features Suraj Venjaramoodu, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and others, with Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar reprising their roles. Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi are expected to make cameo appearances. Dharman and KHxRK are also in his line-up.
