Nana Patekar Dies at 75; SRK, Salman and Bollywood Pay Tribute

A life of intensity, on and off screen

Nana Patekar, the three-time National Award-winning actor, died early this morning in Goa at 75. He was found unconscious at his Dona Paula residence and taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted revival for around 45 minutes. He was declared dead around 5:20 am; doctors cited cardiac arrest as the cause.

His farewell will match the stature he held in Indian cinema. The actor will be cremated with full state honours at his ancestral farmhouse in Donje, Pune, this evening. Before the rites, his body will be kept at the property so family, close friends, colleagues and local villagers can pay their last respects.

What the tributes reveal

Shah Rukh Khan shared the story that sums up Patekar’s unusual warmth. Meeting him for the first time, a nervous Khan fiddled with his hair. Patekar slapped his hand away and said, “hero ki tarah Baal mat bana…tu actor hai!” In the same note, SRK wrote that Patekar “didn’t flatter you; he didn’t tell you what you wanted to hear. He told you what you needed to hear.”

Ajay Devgn remembered a performer who could make audiences feel happiness, sadness and anger with equal force. Rohit Shetty recalled late-night calls that began without pleasantries and a Golmaal Again cameo where Patekar refused a fee and asked him to donate to an orphanage instead. Salman Khan kept his message brief: “Nanaaaaaaa Rest in peace bhau…”

That refusal to flatter was not rudeness for its own sake. It was a working philosophy. Patekar’s note to young actors, as SRK quoted, was “hero banne ke chakar mein actor mat khona” — don’t lose the actor in the pursuit of being a hero. That line explains why actors from different generations are mourning him as a mentor and critic, not just a co-star.

Why he left a void

Patekar was not a star in the polish-and-glamour sense. He was a screen actor whose authority came from honesty of impulse, timing and a face that could switch from menace to comedy in a beat. That range made films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Ab Tak Chhappan, Welcome, Apaharan, Taxi No 9211 and Raajneeti feel lived-in rather than performed.

  • Three National Film Awards, two Maharashtra State Film Awards and a Padma Shri in 2013
  • Last seen on the big screen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2026 romantic action thriller O’ Romeo
  • Also appeared in Prakash Jha’s socio-political series Sankalp and had a cameo in Subedaar

For the audience, the loss is concrete: there will be no new Patekar performances to argue about. But the body of work remains, and it rewards close viewing. Watch him in Parinda for controlled menace, in Welcome for comic timing, and in Krantiveer for moral heat.
