Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is getting a sharper edit before it reaches theatres. The sequel now reportedly runs 2 hours 45 minutes after the team removed around 100 minutes from an early cut that stretched past four hours.

How the runtime changed

A Movies Singapore report shared by Pinkvilla says the first assembled version ran roughly 4 hours 25 minutes. The final certified version has been locked at 165 minutes, with more than 100 minutes trimmed to keep the film from drifting away from the main storyline.

The film is scheduled to open in theatres on October 16, 2026, with Nelson Dilipkumar directing the follow-up to the 2023 blockbuster.

Why the trim matters

Long first cuts are common in franchise filmmaking, but landing at 2 hours 45 minutes signals a clear priority: a tighter theatrical experience over an extended assembly. For audiences, that means a faster setup and a stronger run into the action. A 165-minute film still allows room for a mass entertainer without testing patience the way a four-hour cut would.

  • Runtime: 2 hours 45 minutes after a reported 100-minute trim.
  • First cut: more than 4 hours 25 minutes.
  • Release date: October 16, 2026.

The mission and the cast

The story follows retired warden ‘Tiger’ Muthuvel Pandian, whose quiet life is shattered when a dangerous empire threatens his family and legacy. He goes undercover as a driver, traces the chain of command, and is forced to revive old skills and allies.

Rajinikanth reprises his lead role. Returning cast includes Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Jackie Shroff and Mirnaa. New faces include Suryah, Suraj, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty, while Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi and Hrithik Roshan are reported to appear in cameos.

What to watch next

A pre-release event is set to stream on Sun NXT before the film opens. After Jailer 2, Rajinikanth moves to Dharman, an action entertainer directed by Ashwath Marimuthu and co-produced by Kamal Haasan, with Simran Bagga, Raashii Khanna and Yogi Babu in key roles. He is also attached to the tentatively titled KHxRK, which reunites him with Kamal Haasan on screen after four decades.
