Sunny Deol’s no-action Ikka hits Netflix No. 1

Sunny Deol has spent more than four decades selling action. From the iconic hand pump in Gadar to the battlefield scale of Border 2, his screen image has been built on high-impact moments. So a legal drama with no fight sequence was a big left turn for his first streaming film.

Ikka, directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and co-starring Akshaye Khanna, released on Netflix on July 10. Within its first few days it climbed to the No. 1 spot on the platform.

The fear before the frame

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director, Original Films at Netflix India, says Deol was initially “apprehensive” about the project. His worry was simple: there was no action.

Action has been his USP for close to four decades, so she framed the risk differently. “That’s the beauty of doing streaming,” she told him. The pitch: take a familiar genre, put him in a courtroom drama, and let the audience decide.

She offered a simple check-in. Two months later, either she would admit they should have added an action scene, or he would call it a good idea. Deol still needed convincing.

He would laugh whenever Ruchikaa called it a “debut,” asking, “I’m 60 years old. How can I debut?” Coming right after Border 2, he also wanted to be sure: “Are you sure? Border abhi aayi hai.”

A complementary move, not a replacement

The strategy was never to erase his action stardom. Ruchikaa said Netflix already had titles like Border and Jaat on the service. An original film had to stand on its own as a complementary offering: a beloved star placed in a familiar genre that keeps viewers watching.

She believes that freshness is what made Ikka connect. Eventually, Sunny agreed: “I’m going with the conviction that you guys have, and I’m going to give you my all.”

Here’s what the story tells us:

  • Sunny Deol’s streaming debut was the no-action courtroom drama Ikka.
  • The film hit the No. 1 spot on Netflix in its first few days.
  • Netflix pitched the role as a complement to his action hits, not a replacement.

For a star enjoying a second wind from Gadar 2, Border 2 and Jaat, stepping into a counter-type part was a calculated risk. It also illustrates how streamers are casting known faces against the grain to hold attention on a crowded home screen.

If you missed the July 10 arrival, Ikka is streaming now.
